Hernandez defeats Pena by 49 votes

Brownsville businessman and former city commissioner Ernie L. Hernandez wins the democratic race for Cameron County commissioner precinct 2.

Hernandez defeated Brownsville attorney Ruben Pena by only 49 votes.

Hernandez garnered 2,159 votes to Pena's 2,110 votes.

The former city commissioner received 240 mail-in votes and 1,103 early votes. Pena received only 34 mail-in votes, but received 1,166 early votes.

According to the Texas Secretary of State's office, unless someone decides to run as a write-in candidate, Hernandez will run unopposed during the November general election and win the seat vacated by John Wood who is running on the Democratic ticket for Cameron County judge.
