2 injured when ATVs roll down hill

Two Yuma residents were transported to the hospital after the ATVs they were riding stalled and rolled down a hill Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened at about 1:45 p.m. in a desert area near Interstate 8 and Avenue 4-1/2E.

At that time, 78-year-old James Amy, 63-year-old Jerry Ball and 63-year-old Carma Ball were riding their ATVs up a steep hill about 200 feet in height.

According to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, James rode his ATV up the hill and made it safely to the top. Jerry followed but lost momentum about 20 feet from the top of the hill and stalled.

Carma, who was following her husband, tried to go around him but also lost momentum. Her ATV began to slide backwards before flipping and rolling down the hill.

Seeing Carma was in danger, James rode down the hill to assist. But while traveling around Jerry, James lost control of his ATV, which also flipped and rolled downhill.

Emergency personnel with Rural/Metro transported both James and Carma, who were experiencing neck and back pain, to Yuma Regional Medical Center. Their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

According to Rural/Metro, both James and Carma had been wearing helmets.
