Welcome to Raising Yuma - September, 2012

As we get our kids settled back into school routines, it's a good time to think about ways to continue education at home.

An easy solution is often found in digital media – be it a laptop, smartphone, tablet or even some video games.

First though, how soon is too soon to introduce your kids to technology? Is it age 1 or 2, or should they be a little older? See what the experts have to say on page 14.

Once your kids are ready for technology, check out our recommended apps on page 8. These have been kid-tested (and mom-tested, too!) by Raising Yuma to find out what apps children love. Some are educational, while others are just plain fun.

You may find though that some of these technological marvels, while educational and/or fun, come with some annoying sound effects. And if your kid is anything like mine, she's not happy when Momma demands she deploy the mute button. Check out what experts think about headphones and how to use them safely on page 20.

Older children may be ready to venture into the world online, which can be a scary place. But there are steps parents can take to keep their kids safe from a variety of online predators. Read how on page 10.

We hope you enjoy this issue of Raising Yuma. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please send me an email at rmolenar@yumasun.com, or call me at 928-539-6862.
