Cibola’s Bernie Montoya won the Full Sports Invitational in Scottsdale on Friday as the Raider cross country team finished fifth overall out of 23 teams.
Rounding out the boys team were Jose Garcia (10), Alonso Perez (39), Christian Perez (58) and Jesse Chavez (69). The Raiders scored 177 where first place Desert Vista totaled 83 points.
On the girls side, Monica Huston finished second as the Raiders finished sixth of 18 teams.
Cibola’s other finishers were Amanda Martinez (19), Ally Jeffers (30), Shanna Norton (80) and
Melissa Mendoza (95). Xavier finished first and was paced by race-winner Sarah Fakler.
“Overall, we’re pleased with the results,” Cibola coach Kris Norton said. “We wanted to compete with the best teams in the state and for our first race of the year we did pretty well. If some more of our kids step it up, we’ll be competing at the top this year.”

Cibola, Hann breeze past competition
The Cibola girls golf team shot a combined 187 to take home the win Friday night at Desert Hills.
Cibola’s Yesong Hann earned medalist honors shooting a 37.
Gila Ridge took second, shooting a combined score of 218. Tayler McKenna led the Hawks shooting a 51 in the match.
Kofa came in third with a combined score of 266. Onammi Garcia shot a 48 for the Kings.
Yuma did not have enough golfers to field a full team.

Yuma-area teams
Gila Ridge beat out Yuma, San Luis, Cibola and Kofa on Friday at Mesa del Sol.
The Hawks shot a combined 168.
Gila Ridge’s Brady McClellan earned the medalist honors, shooting a 37.
Kofa came in second with a total score of 210.
San Luis took third with shooting 276 as a team.
Both Yuma and Cibola did not have enough golfers to field a full team.
