Best Chiropractic Office: Richard A. Madrid, DC

Having practiced chiropractic in Michigan, Dr. Richard Madrid decided he wanted a respite from the cold, in a community somewhere in the warmth of the Southwest, not far from where he had been born.

Today, three decades later, his patients in the Yuma area may not care what brought him to Yuma — they're just glad he's here.

Dr. Madrid has been picked as the area's Best Chiropractor in 2010 in Yuma's Best, the Yuma Sun's annual poll of readers' preferred businesses and services.

“We're very grateful to the community” for the honor, said his wife, Carole, who serves as office manager of the practice at 2375 S. 4th Ave.

In what is known as a family practice of chiropractic, Madrid treats a wide variety of maladies suffered by patients of all ages, Carole said.

“We've had patients ranging in age from hours old to over 100 years old,” she said. “I think our oldest patient was 102.”

She added, “We treat everything from headaches to lower back pains.”

Madrid applies a holistic approach to chiropractic medicine that takes into account the value of diet, nutrition, supplements and exercise in the patients' care and recovery, Carole added.

Born in San Diego, Madrid served with the U.S. Air Force as a “proud veteran” of the Vietnam War. Following his service, he graduated in 1972 from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and then went into practice in Michigan.

But eventually, “he wanted to be back in the Southwest, he wanted to be in the warmth,” Carole recalled.

“When he came to Yuma in 1981, he said, ‘This is it.'”

Madrid opened a practice on 8th Avenue and later opened satellite practices in the Foothills and in San Luis, Ariz. Meanwhile, he and wife raised three children, all of whom graduated from Kofa High School and who have since returned. The Madrids have five grandchildren.

Madrid closed his 8th Street office in 1999, but then two years later, he reopened his office in its current location on 4th Avenue.

Madrid always accepts new patients, Carole said, and no appointments are necessary.

“It's strictly walk-in, sign-in, first-come, first-served,” she said.

Morning sign-in for patients take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Afternoon sign-ins take place on the same days from 3 to 5:30.

“We work year-around,” she added.

“We really enjoy it,” Carole said. “He loves what he does. He just loves what he does.”
