Should we even bother with resolutions?
How about this? Make a New Year's resolution knowing you will likely fail. This was the advice given by Dr. Carl Myers, chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs at Yuma Regional Medical Center.
He surprised me when he said that during an interview for a “Healthy Yuma” story. Why should someone make the effort, then? Because of the lessons learned. I'll quote from the story: “Long-term success requires persistence and learning from failure. Do something enough times and it will become a part of your life,” the doctor said.
“So if you are weary of making another attempt at quitting smoking or losing weight, keep in mind that it's worth another try — even if just for the learning experience.”
I don't personally make New Year's resolutions. I believe we should try to better ourselves all year long. But I liked his point – try something enough times, and eventually we'll achieve the goal.
