Wilber 'Sparky' and Verda Matthews

Wilber "Sparky" and Verda Matthews celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends at their home.

Wilber served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his enlistment, he returned to Barnston, Neb., and married Verda Willey on March 20, 1948. He did a variety of jobs from farming to mechanics, moving to Arizona in 1961. He was the general manager of Cunard Motors until 1988 when he retired. Verda devoted her life to raising their five children and helping on the farm.

The couple's children are Charlotte (Monty Ahles) Radtke, Wayne (Martha) Matthews, Amy (John) Grable, Betsy (Jose) Ramirez, all of Yuma, and Pamela (Mark) Hardison of Tulsa, Okla. In addition, they have 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
