A Miss San Luis with a message
This week, Stephanie Pereda concludes her term as Miss San Luis, handing over the crown to her successor.
In the platform of her bid for the title of Miss San Luis and later for Miss Arizona, Pereda pushed the cause of prevention of teenage pregnancies.
Appearing before youth groups at the San Luis Library and at public events, she pitched the slogan "Carry a backpack, not a diaper bag," in what was an appeal to teen girls to not allow pregnancy derail their educations and their dreams.
Her message is relevant in a county where the teen pregnancy rate is consistently high.
The five candidates competing to succeed Pereda have adopted as their platforms the causes of child literacy, economic development, domestic violence prevention, prevention of child obesity and community involvement.
Congratulations are due to Pereda – and to her successor.
