Interesting information from the 1940 El Saguaro:
*According to the 1940 "El Saguaro," many improvements were made to YUHS during the summer months. When students returned to school that fall, they found a new physics lab, a remodeled main office, and redecorated halls and classrooms. There was also a new public address system, which was used at football games, assemblies and dances, as well as a new recording machine for the music department and radio class.
*Vetra Bruce was the 1940 valedictorian, while Mary Jo Dickerson was salutatorian.
*Norma Nell Newman was the Class Queen.
*The YUHS cheerleaders were Paul Hodges, Mary Louise Balsz and Bob Krahl.
*" 'Sock-her,' the old game of kick and run, was originated by a plump woman who needed reducing. So the game was started. ... The gym girls went through the soccer playing season with few casualties, and lost a great deal off their hips and waistlines." - from the girls' soccer section of the yearbook
