San Luis PD announces new main telephone number
San Luis residents who call the city's police department for a non-emergency need to remember to dial a different telephone number now.
For emergencies, however, nothing has changed and residents are still being urged to call 911.
The new phone number — (928) 341-2420 — has permanently replaced the old phone number of (928) 627-8881, the official number since the creation of the San Luis Police Department in June 1980.
“We realize that most members of our community have memorized our original phone number, so we encourage everyone to memorize our new one and to dial 911 in case of an emergency,” said Chief Arturo Ramos.
Police Administrator Tadeo De La Hoya explained that the department installed a new digital telephone system back in 2004, and that recent changes and upgrades made to it have resulted in the old analog phone number becoming obsolete.
“The old phone number is still going to be in place, but it is only used as a backup. We really want people to start using the new number.”
De La Hoya said that despite the 341-2420 number having been in use the past nine years, some longtime residents are so used to calling the old number that they are having a hard time getting used to having to call a different number now.
De La Hoya said all calls to the police department made with the new number through the new digital telephone system are answered by its communications section, which then screens and reroutes them either to police and fire emergency dispatchers or other non-emergency areas of the police department.
