After a standoff outside a Foothills residence early Tuesday morning that lasted nearly five hours, deputies from the Yuma County Sheriff's Office detained two people.

At about 3:47 a.m. the sheriff's office received a 911 call from a neighbor who reported hearing a gunshot and a woman screaming inside a home at 11560 S. Sandra Ave., YCSO spokesman Capt. Eben Bratcher said. When deputies arrived on scene, they attempted to make contact with the occupants of the residence, but were unsuccessful in doing so.

“We could tell people were inside, but were refusing to come to the door,” Bratcher said.

Deputies then set up a perimeter around the home and evacuated the neighboring residences.

“I thought we had the entire sheriff's office out here,” said William Engle, who lives in the vicinity. “I haven't seen that many deputies in my life.”

Engle, who normally wakes up around 5 a.m., said he did not hear the shots being fired and didn't realize anything was going on in his neighborhood until he went out and got his newspaper.

“I saw these funny lights in front of our house and thought our neighbor may have hung up some Christmas lights,” Engle said.

Bratcher said negotiators spent the next several hours trying to make contact with the occupants of the home while a search warrant was drafted. The sheriff's office Special Response Team (SRT) also responded to the scene.

Negotiators were finally able to speak with the occupants of the home on a cellphone at about 8:30 a.m., but Bratcher said they were still refusing to come out of the residence and speak with deputies. Finally the SRT team made entry into the house and detained two adults.

The occupants who were detained have been identified as Jason Anderson, 31, and Jessica McAdams, 31, both of Yuma.

Once the incident was over, sheriff's office investigators served the search warrant at the residence.
