Woman arrested in meth case charged with three felonies
A criminal complaint was filed Friday in Yuma Justice Court against a woman who was arrested after police allegedly found about $1,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine hidden in the truck she was driving.
In a hearing held before Yuma Justice of the Peace Greg Stewart, 35-year-old Kelly Ann Oliver was informed that based on prosecutors' review of the case against her, the Yuma County Attorney's Office was charging her with three felony offenses: possession of a dangerous drug for sale, transportation of a dangerous drug for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“You need to understand these are serious allegations against you,” Stewart told an obviously shaken Oliver.
Before Stewart assigned a court-appointed attorney to represent her, Oliver informed the court that she could not afford to hire one on her own because she hadn't worked in 3 1/2 years due to taking care of her son, who is on dialysis and on the liver transplant list.
Stewart also set her bond at $35,000 and scheduled her next court date, a preliminary hearing, for 4 p.m. on May 3.
At about 12:27 a.m. on April 24, officers with the Yuma Police Department's Crime Suppression Unit performed a traffic stop on the Dodge pickup Oliver was driving in the 300 block of East 24th Street for an alleged civil traffic violation.
Officers speaking to Oliver became suspicious because they said she was exhibiting nervous behavior. They then requested the assistance of a police dog to search the vehicle's exterior.
A canine team from the U.S. Border Patrol responded, and agents inspected the vehicle with the dog. The dog then indicated the possible presence of contraband inside the vehicle.
Officers searched the inside of the truck and reportedly found about 28.1 grams of meth and related drug paraphernalia.
Oliver was arrested and booked into Yuma County jail on charges of possession of dangerous drugs for sale, transportation of dangerous drugs for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license.
