Suspect in standoff in custody

A suspect wanted for questioning in an aggravated assault and attempted sexual assault is now in custody after a 5-hour standoff with police that started Monday night.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was holed up inside his residence at the Yuma Mobile Home Park on Virginia Drive and 25th Street and refusing to come out.

Shortly after 1 a.m., members of Yuma Police Department's Special Enforcement Team made entry to the home by breaking a window at the front of the home and arrested the suspect.  Prior to their entry officers announced they had a search warrant and were about to enter the residence.  

According to Sgt. Leanne Worthen of the Yuma Police Department, officers responded to a call at the residence shortly after 7 p.m. and spent several hours attempting to make contact with the suspect.  During the standoff officers could be heard warning the man, who they were calling 'Chad' over a loudspeaker system that if he didn't come out a canine officer would be sent in saying, "He will find you and he will bite you."

"There is someone in there. Whether it is him or not, we don't know," Worthen said, "so you stand out and try to make contact."

Police closed off several streets in the area and evacuated two of the adjoining residences.  Officers did not allow any residents back into the mobile home park until the suspect was in custody.
