Indoor miniature golf, party fun coming to Yuma

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

There's some fun - and climate-controlled - stuff coming to the Pacific Plaza, 1335 S. Pacific Ave. Michael Swederski is getting ready to open ZPS Miniature Golf while his wife will be opening Sassy Sue's Boutique and Dress Up Parties.

Sue said the couple, who moved to Yuma a couple of years ago, wanted to provide "a clean, fun, safe" place for kids to have a good time - and adults, too. They bring a lot of experience working with kids and youth groups to the projects they hope to complete by Jan. 1.

ZPS Miniature Golf - named for the couple's 9-year-old son, Zachary Parker Swederski - will feature 18 holes of indoor miniature golf, Internet cafe with ice cream parlor, arcade and party room.

Sassy Sue's will include a boutique for gifts, jewelry, dress-up supplies and other accessories, while Dress Up Parties offers an opportunity for boys and girls to be princesses, pirates, cowboys or rock stars for a day. She's now booking parties for after Jan. 1; call 1-800-513-7314.

For more information the projects, check out ZPSminiaturegolf.com or sassysueparties.com.

"Things are progressing," said Dale Hiles, who is in the midst of renovating the restaurant space at the Shilo in preparation for opening Native New Yorker there. While Hiles doesn't have an exact opening date yet for "The coolest place for the hottest wings," he's really hopeful to be ready for customers before Christmas.

The project has involved a major face-lift to the establishment. The old chandeliers, drapes and furniture are gone, and new brickwork, paint scheme and furnishings - including banks of high-definition television sets - are in.

Native New Yorker is a chicken wing and sports bar franchise chain based in Phoenix.

The city has received plans for Yuma Senior Terraces, a senior apartment complex to be developed at 34th Drive and 22nd Lane by the Foundation for Senior Living based in Phoenix, reported Alan Kircher, assistant city building official. The complex will have 60 units.

---

  Kircher also reported:

  • Permits have been issued for renovations to the third floor and rooftop of the Kress building at 284 S. Main St. in downtown Yuma. Plans are to create a banquet room and blues bar on the third floor and  a lounge on the rooftop. The first floor will be a restaurant. The historic building was purchased in May 2007 by Desert Best Enterprises. Quality Development is the contractor.

  • Building permits have been issued for a new medical office for Dr. Ghebru Woldemichael at Tuscany Plaza, Suite 26.

  • A certificate of occupancy has been issued for the 4,000-square-foot SME office building at 1931 S. Arizona Ave.

  • Plans have been submitted for tenant improvements at Yuma Plaza Shops, Suite A, for an Armed Forces Career Center. The center will include offices and a testing room for the Army, Marines and Navy. The multitenant is located at the southwestern corner of 16th Street and Pacific Avenue.

  • The Radisson Hotel and Homewood Suites are both nearing completion but no opening date has been announced for either property.

A couple of tenants at Southgate Mall are expanding.

Keny Argulo, who moved her Keny's Barbershop to the mall about 1-1/2 years ago, has branched out and opened Uprising Rasta and Hippie Wear. The store is stocked, but as of late Thursday was closed for repairs.

Senny Banuelos started out with a kiosk business, Senny's Selecxion, selling purses, accessories and jewelry. She is now in the process of moving to the space formerly occupied by the Fred Meyer jewelry store and hopes to be settled in by late this week. The move puts her business right across the aisle from her other business, a perfume shop.

Also, Toys for Tots again has its headquarters in a mall space.

Mustard's Italian Restaurant, 204 S. Madison Ave., is joined with Main St. Cinemas for a special dinner and a movie date. Callers to KTTI during Jay Walker's morning show can vie for two movie tickets to the downtown theater and a $25 gift certificate to Mustard's for a special night out.

How's this for a lifestyle change for a building?

Tony Bruno has moved Americana Personalized Fitness and Supplements from its longtime location in the Crescent Center to 200 S. Main St. in the space formerly occupied by an ice cream shop.

Actually, he moved awhile back - Comings and Goings just caught up with him the other day.

Bruno offers fitness training and a large selection of health supplements to help people lose weight and become more fit from the inside out - one happy client said she went from a size 16 to an 8.

Bruno also is a Jiu-Jitsu instructor. He can be reached at 782-3322.

New York Life insurance agent Marci Rios has returned to the Crescent Center with an office in Suite 200 on the second floor after a brief move to the Foothills.

Joining his office is his wife, Carolina, who will be assisting Rios in his other endeavor, helping people through the process of applying for citizenship.

They can be reached at 317-1797.

Hospice of Yuma again is open for business in its thrift store at 1808 S. 8th Ave., with the completion of renovations after damage from a rainstorm in August. That also means the furniture showroom next door again features furniture.

Manager Dorothy Toney invites people to come by to see the "new improved thrift shop with its whole new look."

The reopening came just in time for the holiday season and the shop has "lots of Christmas things ... really  nice stuff," she said, such as trees, ornaments, lights, decor items and clothing.

The shop also has a good selection of winter clothing and coats for all ages from baby to adult as well as household items and other bargains. It's open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The shop has resumed its 50 percent sale on Saturdays.

Donations are being accepted until 3 p.m. weekdays and noon on Saturdays; for free pickup of larger items, call 782-9592.

Proceeds from the shop support care of terminally ill patients provided by the nonprofit organization.

Amberly’s Place, 1350 W. Colorado St., received a city of Yuma Community Development Block Grant for a remodel project that is now under way with Lococo Pilkington as the contractor. The work is expected to take about 90 days.

The project includes enlarging the children's playroom to accommodate the increased number of child abuse cases that use Amberly’s Place during the investigation. New offices also are being added for law enforcement, and a family sanctuary room is being created for parents to use while waiting for the investigative process. The Family Sanctuary will be dedicated to retiring Police Chief Robby Robinson for his years of dedication and support to victims in Yuma.

Amberly's Place will continue to provide services during the remodel, "so please excuse our dust," said Diane Umphress, executive director.

Amberly’s Place has provided crisis response services to thousands of victim in Yuma County and to more than 1,850 victims in the first 11 months of this year. For more information, call 373-0849.
