LOCAL GLANCE (Feb. 6) Boys Basketball

Yuma Catholic cruised comfortably to a 54-48 win over Phoenix Christian in the first round of the Division IV Section I Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday night.

Matt Pistone had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Peter Hurtado had 11 points and six rebounds and Jagan Cleary scored 10 points off of three three-pointers.

“We pretty much controlled the game,” said Yuma Catholic coach Brooks Neumann. “We had a 10- to 12-point lead most of the game. They hit some shots at the end and got it closer, but we played OK. We were a little bit rusty because we hadn't played for a week, but I thought we controlled the game pretty much the whole time.”

Carter Rodriguez scored only four points but played a key component on the offense.

“He broke their press,” Neumann said. “They tried to press us and he took care of the ball.”

Yuma Catholic plays No. 2 Arizona Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Peoria High School.

Cibola falls to No. 3 Westview

Steven Loucks led the Raiders with 15 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks, but it wasn't enough as Cibola lost to No. 2 Westview 59-46 in the Division I Section I Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday night.

“We definitely had our opportunities,” said Cibola coach Tim Keller. “We just didn't shoot well from the outside.”

The Raiders went 3 for 18 from the three-point line.

Jordan Mitchell scored eight points and had seven assists, nine rebounds and six steals in Cibola's final game of the season.

“They played really well defensively tonight,” Keller said.
