LOCAL GLANCE December 11: Prep Basketball, Prep Soccer, Camps

With 20 minutes left, Leonardo Moreno scored what proved to be the game-winner as San Luis beat Southwest 4-3 Tuesday in El Centro.

Moreno finished with two goals for the Sidewinders, while Raul Ordorica had a goal and two assists. Javier Espinoza had a goal as well.

The Sidewinders led 3-1 early, but the Eagles tied the game in the second half.

“It was good to see,” coach Ian McDougall said. “It was almost like they had a 12th man with the refs, but after that last red card (against a Southwest player with 10 minutes left), that kind of let the air out of their tires. It means a lot that we were able to gut out a win.”

Kings take care of Knights

Kevin Huizar had two goals and three assists as Kofa beat Lake Havasu 11-0 on Tuesday.

The Kings led 9-0 at halftime. Juan Pablo Figueroa, Frank Mallek and Jesus Felix had two goals each. Robert Salazar, Gerardo Ortega and Daniel Urias had a goal each.

Kofa routs Lake Havasu

Leticia Casillas scored three goals to lead the potent Kofa scoring attack in an 11-0 win against Lake Havasu on Tuesday.

Dania Gomez and Cynthia Gomez had two each for the Kings, while Alex Estrada, Kaylana Bustillos, Nicole Hartman and Abigail Rosales rounded out the scoring.

Raiders roll late against Knights

The Cibola boys overcame a sluggish start, topping Lake Havasu 47-32 on Tuesday.

Both teams were at the Southwest Rotary Classic in Yuma this weekend, playing four games in three days. Cibola coach Tim Keller said it showed early.

“Everybody looked tired after last week,” Keller said. “They looked tired, we looked tired. It was just a slow start.”

The Raiders used a 16-9 third quarter to turn a reasonably close game in a 47-32 lead heading into the final quarter.

Steven Loucks had 16 points and four blocks for the Raiders, while Brett Boyer scored 15 points on five 3-pointers. Jordan Mitchell had 13 points and five assists.

Keller said he was glad to see the Raiders make their free throws, going 11 for 13 after entering the game at 61 percent.

Five score in double figures for YC

Carter Rodriguez led five Yuma Catholic players in double figures with 17 points as Yuma Catholic won at home Tuesday against River Valley, 62-41.

Only six players scored for the Shamrocks, five them reaching at least 10 points. Matt Pistone had 11 points to go with 14 rebounds, while Peter Hurtado, Jagan Cleary and Jaysn Reid had 10 each.

Rodriguez had eight of the Shamrocks' 21 assists.

“We're averaging like 20 assists a night,” coach Brooks Neumann said. “That means we're an unselfish team. That's what I'm most proud of.”

Hawks beat Brawley

Parker Rodriguez led Gila Ridge in scoring with 12 points and eight rebounds in the Hawks 53-39 win over Brawley Tuesday.

Behind Rodriguez, Marcus Weeks scored 11 points and Dillon Chavez had eight points with 10 rebounds.

Cibola holds off Lake Havasu

Malacha Jackson had 16 points while Alexis Evan Grabbed 10 rebounds as Cibola topped Lake Havasu 47-41 on Tuesday.

The game was tied at halftime before the Raiders opened a lead as big as 10 points.

“It was a grind-it-out type of game, like we thought it would be,” coach Justin Hager said. “Every possession was a big possession.”

Kofa wins defensive battle

Adly Wiley scored 11 points to lead Kofa to a 40-20 win over San Luis on Tuesday.

Jackie Fuentes added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Kings, who led 19-10 at halftime.

“It was a scrappy game,” Kofa coach Mary Kay Garcia said. “It was lower scoring than what we are used to.”

Gila Ridge falls to Brawley

Naomi Henry's double-double wasn't enough as Gila Ridge lost 44-36 to Brawley Tuesday.

Henry scored 12 points and grabbed 12 boards, but her Hawks trailed 21-10 at halftime. They took a 27-26 lead late in the third quarter but trailed heading into the fourth.

“We fought back,” Gila Ridge coach David Schultz said. “We just came up a little short.”

Salome routs San Pasqual

Ceara Ingraham scored 21 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for San Pasqual in a 56-35 loss to Salome on Tuesday.

“We were able to feed her the ball,” coach Patricia Malvido said. “We wanted to get he ball into our posts, and anytime Ceara touched the ball it was going in. She even made some 12-footers and went 5 for 8 from the line.”

Marissa Miller added eight points and seven rebounds for the Warriors.

YC loses at buzzer

Yuma Catholic missed a tying 3-point shot at the buzzer Tuesday in a 43-40 loss at River Valley Tuesday.

Madison Brazeel had 18 points and five assists for the Shamrocks, while Mary Terkelsen had 15 points and six rebounds.

CAMPS

AWC hosting holiday hoops camp

The Arizona Western men's basketball team is hosting a holiday camp Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. at The House.

The cost for the camp is $60 and is for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Lunch and a shirt are included.

San Pasqual camp Dec. 22

San Pasqual baseball coach will put on a baseball camp Dec. 22 for all Yuma-area baseball players.

The camp is for boys and girls between seven and 18 years old and will run from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the San Pasqual baseball fields. The camp costs $25 and includes lunch.
