Former police dispatcher accused of misdemeanor theft
SAN LUIS, Ariz. — A former dispatcher for the San Luis Police Department faces four misdemeanor charges of theft.
A complaint filed in San Luis Justice Court accuses Raymundo Navarro Jr., 37, of receiving payments for property belonging to another person between August and November of 2012.
According to complaint by the Yuma County Attorney's Office, he received payments of nearly $1,000 each on Aug. 31, Sept. 18, Oct. 18 and Nov. 18.
San Luis police said the case involved mortgage fraud but declined to offer more details.
Navarro made his first appearance in Justice Court on Friday, at which time he pleaded innocent to the misdemeanor charges. His next scheduled court appearance is a Feb. 28 pretrial conference before Justice of the Peace Jorge Lozano.
Police began an investigation into the case after receiving a report in December about the alleged fraud, Police Detective Ernesto Prieto said.
“Navarro was not a police officer,” he said. “As a dispatcher, he had another type of certification. We began an investigation and we delivered the results to the county attorney's office, which filed the complaint.”
Navarro, an 18-year employee of the city, resigned from his job on Dec. 11. “At the time the allegations were made (against him) for mortgage fraud, he was still working for the city,” Prieto said.
