Man arrested after allegedly fleeing from police

A Yuma man was arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly fleeing from police in the vehicle he was driving, crashing into parked vehicles and running on foot from the scene.

The incident began at about 1:40 p.m. when a detective with the Yuma Police Department attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle driven by 28-year-old Marcos Medina at an unspecified location. Medina initially pulled over but allegedly sped away in his vehicle as the detective approached on foot.

As Medina was allegedly attempting to flee, police said he almost collided with a second patrol vehicle occupied by two police officers who were responding to assist the detective with the traffic stop.

Medina drove to the area of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street where he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a parked passenger car and a parked motor scooter. The collision caused substantial damage to both vehicles, police said.

After the wreck, Medina allegedly fled on foot, but was caught and arrested by police a short time later.

Medina sustained minor injuries and was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Medina remained under YPD supervision Saturday evening. He will be booked into Yuma County jail where he is expected to face several charges including aggravated assault on police, criminal damage, possession of dangerous drugs, aggravated DUI, endangerment, and reckless driving.
