PREP CROSS COUNTRY
YC has seven medalists in Calif.
The Yuma Catholic cross country team had seven medalists Saturday at a six-team meet in El Centro against all Imperial Valley schools.
Overall, the YC boys took fifth and the girls fourth.
In the freshman-sophomore boys race, the Shamrocks had four of the top 15 runners — Becket Edwards (eighth in 18 minutes, 23 seconds), Adam Badilla (10th in 19:12), Adam Gump (11th in 19:17, two minutes faster than his best time) and Nehls Rogers (14th in 19:44). The girls had one medalist in the freshman- sophomore race, freshman Loretta Peffers. In her third race, she was ninth in 24:49. In the junior-senior race, Adriana Solorzano was eighth in 23:05 and Louise Scholle was 13th in 23:48.
Calexico won on the boys side and El Centro-Southwest won the girls.
Coach Ralph Farr said he liked the improvement his young team continued to show. He said he was very impressed with Calexico, which had four runners finish in less than 17 minutes. Calexico will be at West Wetlands Saturday to face Cibola and state champion Bernie Montoya in a multi-team meet — something Farr thinks will be very interesting.
“Obviously no one is going to beat Bernie Montoya, and (the Calexico coach) knows that” Farr said. “But these kids bunched really well, and we're not sure how deep Cibola is this year.”
Cibola swimmers take third
The Cibola swim team took home bronze in five events Saturday at the Mesa Relays Saturday at Kino Pool in Mesa.
Ryan Corbin, Freddy Martinez, George Gould and Danny Russell-Cheung took fourth in the 400 medley relay and the 200 butterfly relay. Lorenzo Chavez joined Corbin, Gould and Russell-Cheung to capture the bronze in the 200 backstroke relay. Eli McBride, Caleb Newgent and Eric Aguiar teamed up to take bronze in the diving relay.
For the girls Anna Gould, Sarah Russell-Cheung, Alex Lashway and Jesse Kaba won bronze in the 200 breaststroke relay. They also finished fourth in the 400 medley relay.
