AWC students picked to study in Spain
Dushon Smith was recently selected as one of 20 students from across the country to study abroad this summer as part of Council of Opportunity in Education's Keith Sherin International Global Leadership Program.
The Arizona Western College student was chosen based on his participation in the Student Support Services (SSS) Keep Envisioning Your Success (KEYS) Ronald E. McNair Program program.
He will travel to Spain on May 29 for the monthlong study.
“It was an overwhelming and very ecstatic feeling,” said Smith about being selected. He said he was nominated for the program, as well as a scholarship, by Michelle Thomas, program director of the SSS/KEYS Program.
While he was awarded a scholarship for a portion of the cost associated with the study abroad program, he is still looking to raise $500 of the $2,500 needed for the trip at the end of the month.
During his first-ever trip overseas, said Smith, he has the option of staying with a family from the area or staying in the dorms.
Maria Oros, another student in the SSS/KEYS program, was also selected to study abroad. She was chosen for the Culture Experience Abroad Program, and while she was initially scheduled to travel to Spain in June, she will now study overseas during the spring 2014 semester. Smith said the program will be a beneficial stepping-stone toward his ambition of becoming a physician's assistant.
“I will be taking Spanish classes, trying to gain fluency and taking cultural enrichment there and learning about the history.”
In addition to volunteering at Copper Hills Assisted Living and at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Smith is a part of AWC's SOTE (Seeking Opportunities Through Education) club and the Computer Club.
