Road projects under way in Somerton, San Luis

Two major roads in San Luis, Ariz., and Somerton are getting resurfaced as part of improvement projects totaling more than $1 million.

Somerton Avenue is being redone between County 14th and County 15th streets, while Juan Sanchez Boulevard in San Luis is being reconstructed between Avenues F and H.

“These are projects the cities are doing, but with federal funds administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation,” said Gabriella Kemp, community relations officer for ADOT.

“They are local projects, but in one way or another they affect the state highway system,” Kemp said.

Somerton Avenue, one of the most heavily traveled roadways in Somerton, extends north and south through the city, linking up with Highway 95. Juan Sanchez links up with Highway 95 and with State Route 195.

In both projects, contractors are tearing up old asphalt, repaving and striping the roadways and putting up new signs.

The projects began last week and are expected to be wrapped up in March.

Funded by the Federal Highway Administration, the improvements to Somerton Avenue carry a pricetag of $421,500, while Juan Sanchez Boulevard will cost close to $621,250.

ADOT is warning motorists to use caution when driving on or near the roadways under construction.

“Not only should they be aware that there may be traffic delays but they should respect speed limits to minimize hazards,” Kemp said.

The public can learn more about the projects by visiting azdot.gov/statewide or by calling Kemp at (928) 317-2165.
