Gadsden holds first public Eat Well Fair
Comments 0 | Recommend 0 The Gadsden Elementary School District is getting ready to hold its first public Eat Well Fair. As part of their National Nutrition Month, the physical education department and health and nutrition services at the district invite the public to its event on March 7.
“It is really not the first health fair we hold,” said Carlos González, reading coordinator and member of the committee organizing the fair. “We are part of the Wellness Council Committee that the Gadsden District began three years ago but this time we want to involve the community to build awareness about health and nutrition. We will provide a lot of information at the fair related to nutrition, tobacco, etc.”
The main goal of the fair, which will have informational booths, is to promote physical activity.
“Students are already talking and doing physical activities in the classroom,” González said. “But now we want to promote physical activity and fitness, cardiovascular activity, and to involve parents as well as students. This is only a taste of what they will see at the fair.”
Scheduled activities include walks, stretching exercises, relay races, jump rope and football exercises.
González said that district schools want to “include what is already happening at school at the fair, but in a bigger way.”
He explained that among other things, schools nurses will provide glucose checks.
Agencies participating include Campesinos Sin Fronteras, Health Choice, Yuma County Health Department, Regional Center for Border Health and the district’s Physical Education and Health and Nutrition departments.
The fair is free and it will be held at the Joe Orduño baseball field from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The public is encouraged to wear comfortable clothes. There will be raffles, prizes and giveaways.
