Montoya wins Nike qualifier

With athletes from five states competing, Cibola’s Bernie Montoya won the Nike Southwest Qualifier Saturday at Toka Sticks Golf Club in Queen Creek, Ariz.
He finished the race in 14:47 and will make a return trip to the Nike National on Dec. 1 in Portland, Ore. Coach Kris Norton said Montoya is one of, if not the, favorite to win.
“Bernie had the results we were looking for,” Norton said. “He did qualify and he did win.”
Montoya’s teammate Monica Huston finished 35th in 18:24 and did not qualify.
