It's summer story time at Yuma County libraries

Summer is a time when kids can take a breather and relax after a year of cramming knowledge into their brains, but the lull can also cause them to regress educationally.

In an effort to prevent this, the libraries in Yuma County will host a series of programs and events designed to keep the minds of local kids sharp so they can hit the books with ease in the fall.

"Our biggest program is summer reading for children," said Sarah Wisdom, community relations manager for the Yuma County Library District.

"The kids have to keep a time log with the help of their parents, and after they have logged 10 hours of reading, they are eligible for prizes. Even if the child can't read, if a sibling or adult reads to them, that counts too.

The summer reading program lasts six weeks, during which there are weekly story times, according to Wisdom.

Wisdom said the local library district believes encouraging reading is essential.

"With summer reading and the general promotion of literacy, we try to prevent loss of learning while the kids are out of school. If you keep their minds active, they will suffer less of a learning loss. Reading is important for future success."

Wisdom said in addition to weekly story times, they will have other fun activities for local youths.

"We will have a magician and also a reptile handler from Phoenix who will host the show 'Reptile Adventures.' The adults usually have as much fun as the kids during these events. There is something happening at our facilities every week."

The new main library will have its grand opening May 21 and will boast 80,000 square feet. It is located at 2951 S. 21st Drive and will begin hosting children's events later in the summer.

"The new children's department is very kid-friendly, and will be a great environment for them to come and check out," said Wisdom.
