Cibola outlasts Rincon
After 15 scoreless innings, the No. 4 Raiders finally pushed home a run in the bottom of the ninth to top No. 16 Rincon 1-0 Thursday in a 5A-II second-round loser bracket game at Rose Mofford Field 2.
Isabella Olea led off the ninth with a single and went to second on a Myliah Ramirez sacrifice bunt. Mariah Caro followed with a bunt and Rincon went to third, but the ball went off the fielder's glove covering third and Olea was safe.
Alexis Gorman ended the game, taking an 0-2 pitch between the gap at short and third for a single.
Sarah Ray picked up the win for Cibola, striking out 11 and walking none in the three-hit shutout performance.
Even though the Raiders couldn't score, coach Shelly Baumann said Ray and the Raider defense kept them in the contest.
"We had a lot of good plays," Baumann said. "Alex Roman too a single away making a great diving catch (between short and third). Itzel Rodriguez probably took a base hit away on a Texas Leaguer. ... On a well-hit ball in the ninth Jackie Newbourn had an excellent catch."
The Raiders play No. 8 Boulder Creek at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sandra Day O'Connor High.
