Ledgerwood, Rojano medal at state

Five athletes from three Gila Valley Region schools won medals on the first day on the 5A-II State Track and Field Championships at Chandler High School.

Kofa's Stephanie Ledgerwood was fourth in the 3,200-meter run (11 minutes, 38.93 seconds), missing a top-three finish by less than a second. Kofa's second medal came from Josh Nieves' seventh-place finish in the boys shot put (48 feet, 8 inches).

Yuma High's Steven Rojano also had a fourth-place finish in the long jump (20-3.75).
 Gila Ridge's Sophia Cole was sixth in the long jump and teammate Destiny Dillworth was eighth in the high jump. The girls 1,600 relay -Dillworth, Alyssa WIlliams, Alexia Williams and Tatum Renaud - advanced to the final.

Cibola's Nicolette Monroe qualified for the today's finals in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, ensuring herself a medal for all three events. Monroe's 1,600 relay team also advanced to the finals. Other members of the team are Michelle Soto, Amanda Martinez and Kiana Deihl.

Kofa's Lex Black (110 hurdles) and Paige Perry (400) also qualified for today's finals.
