Warriors come back against Ajo

Down eight after three quarters, the San Pasqual boys basketball team needed just two minutes of playing man defense instead of zone to take the lead for good in a 59-54 victory against Ajo on Saturday.

After Ajo nailed five three-point shots in the third quarter, San Pasqual shifted to tight 1-on-1 coverage, and the 3’s stopped coming.

Redhawk Welch had 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Chaz Tecumseh had 19 points and 11 boards. Lito Alvarez clamped down defensively on the Ajo sharpshooter in the final quarter.

Ajo scored two against San Pasqual

The San Pasqual girls basketball team gave up a basket in the first quarter to Ajo. The Warriors pitched a shutout the rest of the way.

Gina Rivera had 14 points as the Warriors topped Ajo 38-2 against a Red Raider team that has struggled the past two seasons.

Janequa Mills added 11 rebounds for the Warriors (7-6).

PREP BOYS SOCCER

YC blanks River Valley

Jorge Zavala scored the difference maker in a 2-0 Yuma Catholic win at River Valley on Saturday.

Zavala scored unassisted, taking it solo to the net from 25 yards out in the 29th minute. Guillermo Perez added a goal 10 minutes later on an assist from Anthony Matus.

Yuma Catholic improves to 7-4-1 overall and 6-2 in 2A West Region play.

PREP WRESTLING

Cibola third at Flowing Wells

Rafael Jaimes claimed first places at 103 pounds, helping Cibola to a third-place finish at the Flowing Wells Invitational on Saturday.

Adam Ludwin was second at 119, losing his championship match 5-4.

As a team, Cibola finished with 140 points, four behind Ironwood Ridge. Sunnyside won with 225.

Eric Arias (fourth at 130), Isaac Camarillo (fifth at 112), Pablo Moreno (fifth at 140) and Andrew Garcia (sixth at 145) also placed for the Raiders.

Warriors go 2-1 at Parker

San Pasqual finished 2-1 at a four-way meet at Parker on Saturday.

The Warriors, despite only having seven of the 14 weight classes filled,  defeated Yuma Catholic (31-30) and Wickenburg (33-5), but lost to Parker (57-15).

San Pasqual’s 125-pounder Ildefonso Gonzalez won his match against Yuma Catholic with a takedown in the final two seconds to win the 3-1 and give the Warriors the decisive edge against the Shamrocks.

Reggie Sanchez (135) and Andrew Baltazar (140) went 3-0 on the day for the Warriors, who wrestle at Yuma Catholic on Saturday.
