Briana Schmidt wins Miss Yuma County pageant
Briana Schmidt has been named Miss Yuma County 2012. She was crowned Saturday night during the 2012 Scholarship Pageant Program held in the Kofa High School auditorium.
Schmidt was one of eight talented young ladies vying for the crown.
It feels, “incredible,” she said. “It is such an accomplishment. I can't wait to see where the year takes me.”
Schmidt will receive a $5,000 scholarship, jewelry by Sand and Stone, a crown and crown box, an official name badge, an official trophy, and a luggage set, as well as beauty services and a gym membership at World Gym.
Schmidt was chosen by a panel of five judges.
Taryn Struck was the first runner-up and the winner of a $2,500 scholarship. Payton Patane was the second runner-up and the winner of a $1,500 scholarship.
Audrianna Daniel was the third runner-up and the winner of a $1,000 scholarship.
Stephanie Rivas was the fourth runner-up and the winner of a $500 scholarship.
The competition began with the young women competing in lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit round. Contestants took the stage in a variety of swimsuits, including one pieces and bikinis.
During an on-stage interview, each contestant was asked about the social platform which they champion. Schmidt has dedicated herself to preventing domestic violence and sexual abuse.
The contestants also showcased their individual talents by singing, dancing or reading poetry or literature.
The final component was the evening gown competition, with each young woman modeling formal wear for the judges and the audience.
Before Miss Yuma County 2012 was announced, Miss Yuma County 2011 Kathryn Clark bid farewell to the audience.
“This year has been such an amazing experience and it is time to say goodbye,” she said.
Clark wiped tears away while she was recognized for her year of service.
Clark had some words of wisdom for the next crown-bearer.
“I welcome you with open arms into the Miss Yuma County family,” she said. “I encourage you to always strive to do your best. Embrace the opportunity to make Yuma an even better place to call home. Always hold your head high and be proud to say you are Miss Yuma County 2012.”
After the runners-up were announced, four very eager and nervous young ladies held hands and smiled in anticipation underneath the bright lights on stage.
“I was thinking it was either going to be this awesome girl to my right or it's going to be me,” Schmidt said about the final moments.
When her name was announced, a beaming Schmidt walked gracefully across the stage to receive a bouquet of flowers and an official sash from Jennifer Sedler, Miss Arizona 2011.
After hugging Clark, Schmidt knelt so Clark could place the sparkling tiara on her head.
Schmidt said although the competition was fierce, all the contestants were very supportive of one another.
“Everyone worked super hard. Everybody helped everybody. I am feeling loved tonight. They all deserved to win, but I am really glad I have the crown.”
When asked about how prepared she is for the whirlwind tour and responsibilities she will face this coming year, Schmidt said she was, “as ready as I am going to get.”
Schmidt was grateful to all those who have helped her in her journey to becoming Miss Yuma County 2012.
“I just want to thank God for giving me this opportunity, and of course family and friends,” she said. “I wouldn't be here without them.”
The annual Miss Yuma County Scholarship Pageant is the first step in the Miss America Organization. The next step for Schmidt will be the Miss Arizona State Pageant and, if she is successful there, the Miss America Pageant.
