New principal named for Valley Horizon
Tammie Workman says she's going to have some really big shoes to fill when she takes over as principal of Valley Horizon School in August.
Workman, assistant principal at Centennial Middle School, was recently promoted to Valley Horizon's top administrative position and will succeed Laurie Doering. Doering, meanwhile, will become Gary A. Knox Elementary School's first principal when that school opens in August.
"I'm very excited and grateful," Workman said of the promotion. "I'm
really looking forward to it. It's just an awesome responsibility. I just
hope I'm able to serve the children as well as they have been served."
Workman said she plans to strengthen and refine what's already in place at
Valley Horizon and that Doering is doing a tremendous job there.
"It already is a really, really great school, and we just want to carry it
forward in the next few years," she said. "We're going to continue to put
reading first and keep looking at best teacher practices. We're just now
in the initial process of getting the leadership together and looking
ahead to next year."
Workman said one of the main challenges at Valley Horizon School, as it is
with many of the schools in the Yuma area, has to do with the school's
high percentage of English language learners.
