Board to discuss name for coming charter school

At a Tuesday meeting, the Crane Elementary School District governing board will decide on adopting a name for the new district-sponsored charter school to be opened in the fall of 2013.

The board adopted the charter to establish the school on Nov. 27, and now the charter school planning committee will be recommending the name of the school to be adopted as the Jon and Caroline Jessen Science Academy.

In other meeting news, the board will decide whether or not to adopt a resolution urging Congress to stop harmful budget cuts to federal education programs.

“The resolution adopted urges Congress and the Administration to amend the Budget Control Act to mitigate the drastic cuts to education that would affect our students and communities, and to protect education as an investment critical to economic stability and American competitiveness,” stated the district.

“These budget cuts could result in larger class sizes, fewer course offerings, loss of extracurricular activities, and possible staff reductions. Nationwide, sequestration would cut education funding by more than $4 billion.”

ASBA has recommended that Arizona school district governing boards' adopt a resolution urging Congress to stop these across-the-board cuts that would have a detrimental impact upon school districts.
