Gowan Science Academy to hold information meeting

The Gowan Science Academy is holding an information meeting for first- through fourth-grade parents in Yuma County to learn more about the school's curriculum.

The event will be held on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the H.L. Suverkrup Elementary School cafeteria, 1590 S. Avenue C.

Jamie Haines, newly appointed campus principal, explained that they are hoping to make parents aware of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school that is an option for their children when the school opens in the fall.

“This will be a great opportunity for me to introduce myself as the leader of GSA. It is my hope families will attend so that I can start developing relationships with my future students and parents,” she said. “At the informational night parents will get a taste of the curriculum that will be offered at Gowan Science Academy. We will be doing a short demonstration of our Engineering is Elementary curriculum.”

Gowan Science Academy's curriculum will be based on the Next Generation Science Standards.

“Students will learn reading, math, writing and social studies all through the lens of science,” she said. “We will offer fast-paced, rigorous teaching that prepares students for college and career, starting in first grade. GSA will offer afterschool programs to support students' learning and allow students to explore their interests. Parent involvement is another key difference to GSA. Parents will be required to give 20 hours of service to the school over the course of the year.”

Haines noted that parents will have the opportunity to ask questions during the informational meeting. A tour of the campus will also be given so parents can see where classes will take place, Haines added.

She shared that applications for the Crane Elementary School District sponsored charter school are now being accepted. If more than 60 applications are received in a grade level by Feb. 15, Haines said, the selection process will be done through a lottery with first preference given to Crane district residents.

“If our enrollment is not met by Feb. 15, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until capacity is reached,” she said. “A wait list will be created and maintained after capacity has been reached.”

Haines stated that applications for the campus can be picked up at any district school or can be printed from the district website and turned into any Crane school or the district office, 4250 W. 16th St.
