LOCAL GLANCE (Jan. 17): Boys and Girls Track and Field, JUCO Baseball, JUCO Softball, Prep Softball, Prep Baseball

Both the boys and girls Gila Ridge track and field teams won the London Bridge Rotary on Saturday in Lake Havasu.

The boys scored 127 points, which was just good enough to beat Kingman's 126. The girls easily cruised past second-place Kingman, 171-116.5.

The Yuma Catholic boys scored 54 to take seventh place and the girls scored 25 to take seventh.

For Gila Ridge, Adam Williams won the 100-meter (11.48 seconds), long jump (19 feet, 10 inches) and was on the 400 relay team that finished second. Jonathan VanDeberg finished second in both the 1,600 (4:42) and the 3,200 (11:00) and Alec Wilson took second in the long jump (19-9) and high jump (5-10). Ryan Henrichs was second in the 100, 200, and was a part of the second-place 1,600 relay team.

On the girls side, Paeden Jackson took first in the 200 (27.6), 400 (1:01), was on the first-place 1,600 relay and finished second in long jump (14-6). Madison Haynes was on two first-place relay teams (3,200 and 1,600) and finished second in the 800 (2:34) and the 1,600 (5:40).

For the Shamrock boys, sophomore Donovan Rooks won the triple jump (42 feet, 10 inches) and the 200 (24:18.8) and Iran Torres took third in the shotput with a throw of 41-4/12. For the girls, Sydney Compton took second in the 100 (13.95) and the 400 relay team of Compton, Madison Brazeel, Krysta Aitken and Yolanda Perez took second place (55.81).

JUCO SOFTBALL

Matadors sweep Paradise Valley

The Arizona Western softball team won 9-1 and 10-1 at home against Paradise Valley on Saturday.

Hayley Miller (9-3) got the win in Game 1 and Briana VanSickle (8-3) picked up the win in Game 2 for the Matadors, who improved to 21-9 overall and 13-5 in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.

Morgan Paul went 2 for 2 with two runs, RBIs and stolen bases and Summer Ehrig had a solo home run in the fourth.

JUCO BASEBALL

Matadors split with Central

The Arizona Western baseball team won 4-2 and lost 2-1 at Central Arizona on Saturday.

The Matadors picked up a win in Game 1 with the help of four errors by Central Arizona.

In Game 2, Central Arizona scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning with two outs.

PREP BASEBALL

Raiders drop two

The Cibola baseball team lost 3-2 to Red Mountain and 13-1 to Hamilton in the Desert Vista tournament on Saturday.

The Raiders led 2-1 against Red Mountain, but the Mountain Lions took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh and Cibola couldn't score in the bottom half.

“We had opportunities but we just didn't capitalize on the couple things we could have done to put some more runs on the board,” Cibola coach Duane Evans said. “We got really good pitching, did some real good things.”

PREP SOFTBALL

Antelope places second

After beating Ajo 11-1, the Rams fell to Williams 6-0 in the championship game of the Munster Classic in Gila Bend Saturday.

Analysia Rivera took the loss for the Rams giving up 10 hits, seven of which came in the second inning.

Against Ajo, Alissa Caddell got the win, striking out three and allowing four hits and two walks. Cheyenne Lopez went 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs.
