YCSO investigating shooting in Dome Valley
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible homicide in Dome Valley following a standoff with a suspect and an explosion Friday afternoon.
The explosion occurred at about 1:30 p.m. after deputies and Wellton police responded to the report of a murder at a residence located in the 22300 block of East 8th Street.
According to YCSO, a male subject had previously called them and allegedly stated he had just shot his reportedly ill wife at that location. He then hung up the phone.
Upon arrival at the property, the deputies and police were allegedly shot at from inside the residence. One of their vehicles was struck with an unknown caliber bullet.
As the suspect allegedly continued shooting, a large explosion emanated from the interior of the residence.
One deputy was knocked down to the ground by the shock wave of the blast, and was subsequently transported to YRMC by Tri-Valley Ambulance. The deputy was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
The YCSO special response team reported to the scene and escorted firefighters up to the home to extinguish the flames caused by the explosion.
While escorting the firefighters, the special response team encountered what appeared to be an improvised explosive device near the residence that had not detonated.
Members of the YCSO Explosive Ordinance Disposal team were called upon to secure the IED and search the remainder of the residence.
The victim and suspect in the case had not been identified by YCSO as of press time Saturday. Information on whether they were alive or dead was also unavailable.
YCSO is investigating the incident.
