Health district giving flu shots in September
It’s time to roll up your sleeve. The Yuma County Public Health Services District is offering the 2013-2014 seasonal flu vaccine throughout the month of September.
The district will give shots with the latest strains at flu clinics around the county and at the health department, 2200 W. 28th St.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May.
The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the most important step in protecting against the disease. It notes that while there are many different flu viruses, the seasonal vaccine is designed to protect against the three main strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.
“Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season,” it states on www.cdc.gov/flu.
Flu shots are available to individuals 6 months of age and older. Proof of county residency will be required.
The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for individuals 18 years and younger. However, children will not be denied services for inability to pay. Medicare Part B will be accepted.
Individuals are asked to bring immunization records with them. If they are on AHCCCS or Medicare, they must bring their card.
The district will hold flu clinics from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.) every Monday through Thursday at the health department.
In Wellton, the district will hold a flu clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Wellton Library, 28790 San Jose Ave.
In Dateland, a flu clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at Dateland Elementary School, 1300 Avenue 64E.
In San Luis, Ariz., flu shots will be offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at the San Luis Justice Court Precinct No. 2, 1358 E. Liberty St.
