Hawks knocked out of playoffs
The Gila Ridge softball team’s season has come to an end.
The No. 24 seeded Hawks were eliminated by No. 2 Canyon del Oro 12-0 in five innings on Tuesday night at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.
Things got ugly quick for Gila Ridge after misplaying a ball in the outfield off the Dorado’s leadoff hitter. Canyon del Oro followed that up with a couple base hits before Gila Ridge hit a batter and made another error in the inning to fall behind 5-0.
“We finally settled down after down but we dug ourselves a little bit of a hole and it was pretty difficult to get out of that hole,” Hawks coach Jaime McGalliard said.
The Dorados scored six more runs in the second and another in the third to achieve the final score.
The Hawks had seven hits in the game but were unable to score.
Ashley VanWhy went 2 for 2 in the game. Candra Land, Ariana Rader, Summer Ehrig and Kaelin Fox all went 1 for 3 for Gila Ridge.
“We came out a little bit intimidated,” McGalliard said. “From the third inning on we played like we’ve played all year and like we did at the end of the season. We had just dug ourselves into such of a hole that it was just hard to get out of.”
