2 arrested after reportedly crashing into fence
Two people were arrested early Wednesday morning after reportedly crashing into a fence on 16th Street near Interstate 8.
According to the Yuma Police Department, at about 1:07 a.m., Sophia Jimenez drove a Toyota Corolla to a fast food restaurant drive-through lane in the 100 block of West 16th Street and ordered food. Matthew Jimenez was a passenger in the vehicle.
Once at the window, Matthew allegedly showed the cashier a firearm. Sophia paid for the food and left the restaurant, driving eastbound on 16th Street.
A short time later, Sophia reportedly crashed her vehicle into a fence near the freeway, and both occupants of the vehicle exited and fled on foot.
YPD officers responded to the scene of the wreck and attempted to arrest both Matthew and Sophia, but the two allegedly resisted arrest. In an attempt to bring the situation under control, YPD officers used an electronic stun device to incapacitate Sophia.
Both Matthew and Sophia were then arrested and booked into the Yuma County Adult Detention Center, although Sophia has since been released.
YPD officers were able to locate and secure a firearm near the area where the two individuals were arrested.
