Why learn Spanish?

Welcome to Learn Spanish, a new Website created by the Yuma Sun and Bajo El Sol in association with the Somerton Elementary School District.

This site consists of videos, blogs, slideshows, vocabulary lists and other content designed to help and encourage visitors who want to learn the Spanish language.

Why study and practice another language? Why not?

All who live in America must know English to participate in the affairs of their communities and nation. But in U.S. border cities such as Yuma, Somerton and San Luis, people commonly encounter spoken and written Spanish. A working knowledge of that language can serve them well, whether for use on the job, for use in buying medicine at a pharmacy in Algodones, Baja Calif., or more extended travel into Mexico on vacation.

In keeping with that idea, Yuma Sun’s Spanish-language sister newspaper, Bajo El Sol, is offering on its site Aprenda Inglés, a complementary link for Spanish-speakers seeking to improve their English-language skills. Visit it at www.bajoelsol.com.

Learn Spanish and Aprenda Inglés are works in progress, ones we will continue to update with new videos, blog entries and other lessons. We welcome any comments or suggestions for improving these language sites and making them more useful to visitors.
