Spanish class for health care providers

Health care professionals interested in learning Spanish will now have the opportunity to do so with a new course at Arizona Western College this spring.

“Working as a health care professional requires learning a specialized vocabulary, and there is also a growing demand for professional bilingual health care professionals who can communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients,” stated AWC officials.

To help meet that need, AWC is offering SPA 117 Beginning Spanish for Healthcare Professionals during the 2013 spring semester. The course is a three-credit hour class that takes a conversational approach to health care Spanish. No prerequisites are required.

“Students will learn basic key words and phrases within the context of common health care situations. Instructors engage students and reinforce learning by doing role plays, pair activities, small group activities, videos and games,” stated AWC.

“Learning medical Spanish not only helps providers build confidence when speaking or treating Spanish-speaking patients, but it also helps them complete their work more efficiently.”

The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:55 to 7:10 p.m. in Room 165 of the AWC Entrepreneurial Center, 1351 S. Redondo Center Drive.
