Johnson Controls plans addition to battery plant

Johnson Controls is moving forward with plans to expand the battery plant it opened in Yuma in 2006 at 3740 S. Arizona Ave.

The company has submitted plans to the city of Yuma to add 40,000 square feet to the existing 220,000-square-foot building, reported Alan Kircher, the city's deputy building official.

The Yuma plant is a battery fill, package and distribution center for Johnson Controls, which supplies vehicle batteries for several well-known companies and retailers.

In other city of Yuma building activity, Kircher reported:

• The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has submitted plans to build a new church at Cielo Verde, the master planned community located behind the Avenue 8E Walmart Supercenter.

• The University of Phoenix has plans for some interior alterations.

• AgriTrend, 3337 E. 33rd Place, has submitted plans for office improvements.

There's a Mitsubishi dealer in Yuma again, this time as part of the Bill Alexander Automotive Center. Alexander Mitsubishi is at 1350 E. 32nd St. where Alexander Mazda also is located. The dealership can be reached at 314-3400.

There are two new tenants at Southgate Mall and a third has expanded, reported mall manager Bobbi Brooks.

• 723 has expanded into the neighboring space, doubling the size of the store, said owner Arturo Banuelos Jr. He described the store as a retailer for lifestyle brands related to dirt biking, including shirts, sunglasses and other accessories. With the expansion, he's adding such safety gear as helmets and goggles. The store can be reached at 726-9223.

• After working for a while as a hairstylist alongside his wife at Steel Roots, Mike Lujan has moved into a nearby space and opened his own studio, Wicked Pain Body Piercing and Tattoos. The studio can be reached at 276-9297.

• Fan Zone specializes in Oakland Raiders apparel and autographed collectibles. It also is a Hello Kitty store with clothing, costumes, backpacks and accessories with the signature Hello Kitty theme. The store is owned by Lin Zhang and her husband, Aaron Crumpton. It can be reached at 1-520-921-0389.

Dr. Jason Lemmon is making plans to open a dental office at 3325 S. Avenue 8E, Suite 4, in the Cielo Verde Retail Center. A Yuma native, Lemmon has been in practice for three years in Yuma, first with the Avenue B Dental Group (Dr. Steve Rubisch) and more recently with Family Dentistry (Dr. Joseph Gallemore).

Lemmon said he hopes to open his new practice, Picacho Family Dental, by mid-May. He will offer general dentistry for all ages and other services such as implants and oral surgery.

Cummings Chiropractic Office, PC, 242 W. 28th St., is moving but just across the hall into a larger but still homey space. For an appointment Mondays through Thursdays, call the office at 782-4339.

Dr. Stephen Cummings, a Palmer graduate, has been serving Yuma since 1986. He also serves on the advisory board for the massage therapy program offered at Arizona Western College and is associate faculty, teaching essential sciences for the program.

With the planned start soon of the new federal courthouse to be constructed along the riverfront (on the vacant lot to the east of the former Yuma City Hall on 1st Street), contractor Sundt Construction Inc. is looking for local subcontractors and suppliers.

To that end, Sundt is holding an outreach event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pivot Point Conference Center. Interested companies must be prequalified with Sundt Construction. To RSVP for the event, email sundtoutreach@sundt.com.

Misty Smith has opened a beverage bar in the Pioneer Shopping Center next door to Snap Fitness, where she serves coffee made from handpicked organic beans custom-roasted for the store. She also offers whole fruit smoothies, Southern sweet tea, healthy breakfast items and pastries.

The store is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
