Road Construction report 10-25-09

ADOT 16th Street Reconstruction

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010.

Crews are scheduled to begin demolition of the I-8 pedestrian bridge, as well as the northern and southern outer portions of the I-8 roadway bridge. Work will be conducted between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. This work is scheduled to be complete by Wednesday at 6 a.m.

During nighttime work hours, all eastbound and westbound traffic on I-8 will be diverted around the bridge using the 16th Street exit and entrance ramps. Traffic will be required to exit and re-enter the interstate at 16th Street. Traffic will not be diverted during daytime hours between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Brief delays may be experienced as vehicles pass through the area.

Crews will begin work to construct new foundations for the bridge over I-8. Work will begin Monday adjacent to the I-8 entrance and exit ramps. This work is not anticipated to interrupt the flow of traffic on I-8 or on the 16th Street bridge. These foundations will serve as support for the widened bridge.

Left turns are not permitted off of 16th Street between Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway for the safety of all motorists. Traffic control barriers are in place to guide traffic safely through the construction zone. Restricting left turns maintains the flow of traffic through the construction zone and helps reduce unnecessary congestion. Please obey all signage to help keep the construction zone safe for both motorists and crew members.

16th-Arizona improvements

One lane of traffic is open in each direction at this intersection. Arizona Avenue remains closed south of 16th Street to allow the contractor to complete surface reconstruction. The intersection of 16th and Maple is approaching completion, allowing right-turn access into Wendy's.

DPE, a local contractor working for the city of Yuma, is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include six lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.
Avenue A widening

Demolition and reconstruction is under way on the west side of Avenue A between 16th and 24th streets. Due to differences in grade, there will be no westbound traffic from Avenue A onto residential streets south of 16th Street through 19th Street. Access will be maintained into apartment complexes west of Avenue A and south from 20th Street.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street. Through traffic is advised to use 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.

Avenue 4E at 36th Street

Avenue 4E between 32nd and 40th streets is closed through Friday for work at the site of the future public safety training facility, which is at 36th Street. Detour using Avenue 3E, Avenue 4-1/2E or Avenue 5E and 40th Street (County 12th Street).

Fog sealant

The city of Yuma's 2009 fall fog seal program is under way through about the second week of December. Fog seal is a fresh oil spray used to extend the life of street pavement three to five years. In the upcoming weeks, the residential neighborhoods and areas affected will be: Ponderosa 1, 3, 5; Pioneer Park 2, 3, 4; and Yuma Commerce Center, Avenue 7E and 30th Street to the east end. Collector streets affected: 20th Street from Athens Avenue to 45th Avenue, and 12th Street between avenues B and C.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Ponderosa Park 1, 20th Street from Athens west to Avenue C, two lanes.

48th Street/County 13th Street between 3E & 4E

Starting in November, City 48th Street/County 13th Street will be closed between avenues 3E and 4E for private street reconstruction work that includes a new turn lane. Detour by using 40th Street.

Kofa High School driveway at 32nd Street

Left turns onto 32nd Street from the south end of the Kofa campus are now prohibited. Eastbound access to 32nd Street can be reached from the east Kofa driveway, turning right (south) onto Avenue A and making a left turn onto 32nd Street at the traffic signal.
