More advice for pedestrians

Ever since I retired, I have been doing a walking a circuit on 16th Street and Avenue B. I read with interest the suggestions for safety for pedestrians in the Yuma Sun and have a few more observations to add.

When encountering traffic that is turning right onto a busy street, I always walk behind the lead car in the intersection. The drivers always look right, then left, but rarely right again before they pull out. I have narrowly missed being hit about three times before I learned this. That may not sound like a lot, but it only needs to happen once to ruin your whole day.

Drivers I see on 16th Street going east are driving into the sunrise. Many are also preoccupied with cellphones. I have also seen many eating, shaving, putting on makeup and even dressing.

Once in a great while a driver will swerve and hit the curb because they are not paying attention.

I learned to never assume they see me, and the advice in the article to make eye contact is probably the best advice offered.
