Montoya wins Desert Twilight Sweepstakes
Cibola senior Bernie Montoya finished first overall in the Desert Twilight XC Festival Sweepstakes race Friday night in Mesa, giving the boys an overall 20th place finish. Both the Cibola boys and girls qualified for the Sweepstakes race, the festival’s top course.
“We knew we were pretty good, but it was an honor to be selected for both,” said Cibola head coach Kris Norton. “The kids did a great job.”
The girls finished 12th overall in the Sweepstakes race, led by senior Monica Huston who finished fourth with a time of 18:18.23.
“Monica is by far one of the fastest girls to come out of Yuma,” Norton said.
Huston currently has an full-ride scholarship offer to run for BYU but has not made a commitment.
