Somerton's missing brandy makes national news
Comedy Central's Steven Colbert may think the number one threat to America is bears - but it's something out of Somerton that has him in a tizzy lately.
According to Colbert, the number one threat Monday was time-traveling brandy thieves - in Somerton.
If a missing bottle of brandy sounds familiar, that's because it was local news first in the Yuma Sun.
In March, the Yuma Sun reported about a time capsule that was unearthed in Somerton. The time capsule was buried in 1985 on Main Street.
However, one of the contents of the time capsule, a bottle of brandy, was missing, leaving onlookers baffled. Items that were found in the capsule include a VHS tape, letters from Somerton residents, photographs and a 1981 Time magazine with President Ronald Reagan on the cover.
Fast forward one month and news of the Somerton time capsule - and most notably the missing bottle of brandy - traveled all over the nation.
News organizations such as The Associated Press, newspapers in Texas and even a TV station in Alabama picked up the story, which eventually made its way to the popular Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report."
Monday, "The Colbert Report," a nightly comedic news show, highlighted the Somerton topic in one of its skits.
The "ThreatDown" is a skit where host Colbert takes a joking look at what he considers "threats" to America.
On the program Monday, Colbert concluded that it must have been time-traveling brandy thieves that took the brandy.
He jokes that the time-traveling brandy thieves are a threat to America - for the natural reason that they could possibly steal everyone's brandy.
"So where did it go?," Colbert asked. "The only possible explanation is the number one threat: Time-Traveling Brandy Thieves."
