ADOT 16th Street reconstruction

A contractor working for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010.

To provide a safe work zone for construction crews and to facilitate the accelerated schedule, traffic has been limited to one travel lane in each direction on the Interstate 8 bridge. Traffic is moving through the area and business access is open.

ADOT crews are scheduled to begin the demolition of the I-8 pedestrian bridge, as well as the northern and southern outer portions of the I-8 roadway bridge, beginning the night of Thursday. Work will take place between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and between 8 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. A temporary pedestrian walkway has been constructed to allow pedestrian traffic on the bridge.

During nighttime work hours, all eastbound and westbound traffic on I-8 will be diverted around the bridge using the 16th Street exit and entrance ramps. Traffic will be required to exit and reenter the interstate at 16th Street. Traffic will not be diverted during daytime hours between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday. Brief delays may be experienced as vehicles pass through the area.

Avenue 4E at 36th Street

Beginning Monday until completion (approximately 10 days), Avenue 4E will be closed at 36th Street for streetscape site development of the city of Yuma’s new Public Safety Training Facility. Crews will be installing a water pipe across and underneath 4E to service the facility. Access to the Arizona Marketplace will remain open and unaffected. North-south traffic between 32nd and 40th streets may detour using Avenue 4-1/2E, Avenue 3E or Avenue 5E.

16th-Arizona intersection improvements

Arizona Avenue remains closed at the south end of its intersection with 16th Street as surface reconstruction continues. Arizona Avenue is open northbound for travelers making right turns from westbound 16th Street; however, there are no left turns on or off of 16th Street at Arizona Avenue. 15th Street has been reopened and can be used for restaurant and gas station access from Arizona Avenue for travelers coming from the north.

DPE, a local contractor working for the city of Yuma is expanding the intersection of 16th Street and Arizona Avenue to include six lanes of traffic on 16th Street plus additional turn lanes, and turn lanes on Arizona Avenue as well. The contractor plans to use an aggressive timetable for construction, with the goal of finishing months earlier than the expected estimated completion time frame of May 2010. To accomplish this, work will be done during expanded hours and weekends.

Avenue A widening

Starting approximately Tuesday, Oct. 13, north-south traffic along Avenue A between 16th and 24th streets will move to the eastside lanes and demolition and reconstruction will begin on the west side of Avenue A. Due to differences in grade, there will be no westbound traffic from Avenue A onto residential streets south of 16th Street through 19th Street. Access will be maintained into apartment complexes west of Avenue A and south from 20th Street.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street.

Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to use 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.
