Brandon Shirley

Air Force Airman Brandon C. Shirley, son of Kimberly Shirley of Yuma, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Shirley earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is a 2007 graduate of Cibola High School.


James W. Anderson

Army Pvt. James W. Anderson of Yuma has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons use, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics,

Anderson, the son of Cindy Anderson of Yuma, is a 2008 graduate of the Educational Opportunity Center in Yuma.


Girl earns Gold Award

Katelyn Weddle from Troop 1162 recently earned her Gold Award through Girl Scouts after completing a community service project.

The award ceremony was held June 13 at Christ Lutheran Church in Yuma.

Weddle's project was a swim and safety clinic at Marcus Pool. The event drew 30-40 kids.

Weddle has been active with Girl Scouts since kindergarten. Her troop leader is Sherry Petersen and the adviser for her project was Linda Riley.

Weddle recently graduated with honors from Kofa High School.
