Pvt. Oscar R. Ruiz

Army National Guard Pvt. Oscar R. Ruiz has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, Ruiz studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in topics ranging from drill and ceremonies, Army history and core values to traditions, military courtesy and military.

He is the son of Oscar L. and Rosario Ruiz of Yuma and a 2008 graduate of Kofa High School.

New Assistance
League members


After completing the mandatory training and orientation sessions, Susan Hunt, Betty Sanderson and Cheryl Taylor were recently welcomed as new members of the Assistance League of Yuma.

As members of the nonprofit organization, they will work on various community service programs with their mentors and other league members.

The Assistance League of Yuma is a volunteer community service organization that has served area residents through its philanthropic programs since 1970. Two of the organization's most recognized programs are the Thrift Shop at 1054 S. 4th Ave. and Operation School Bell, which provides new clothing for disadvantaged elementary schoolchildren.

Pvt. Alan Sandoval

Army Pvt. Alan I. Sandoval has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He is the son of Arturo Sandoval of Yuma and a 2006 graduate of Cibola High School.

During nine weeks of training, Sandoval studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in areas such as basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training.

Pvt. Adam Warner

Army Pvt. Adam D. Warner has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of basic combat training, Warner received training in topics that included drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice and physical fitness. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Warner is the son of Vickie Pemberton of Yuma and Craig Warner of Mena, Ark.

Jared Grant

Jared Grant of Yuma recently graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.

Grant earned a degree in computer science information systems.

Pvt. Alberto Montijo

Army Pvt. Alberto Montijo recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in areas such as drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy and military justice. Other areas of study included rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Montijo is the son of Arnoldo and Maria G. Montijo of Yuma.

Pvt. Abel Padilla

Army Pvt. Abel Padilla has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied topics that included the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness. He also received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training.

Padilla is a 1996 graduate of Kofa High School.

Sarah  Elkin

Sarah Elkin of Yuma has received a bachelor's degree in French from Gonzaga University.

She was one of 1,072 undergraduates receiving degrees in the Spokane, Wash., university's May 10 commencement exercises.

Janelle Barnicle

Janelle Barnicle of Yuma was placed on the dean's list at Texas Christian University for the recently completed spring semester.

To make the list, she needed a minimum grade-point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Martha Wakamatzu

Martha Wakamatzu of Yuma has been placed on the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at Drew University in Madison, N.J.

To qualify, students must earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or above, the equivalent of a B-plus average, or better.

James Fox

James Fox of Yuma has made the dean's list at the University of Wyoming at Laramie for the recently completed spring semester.

To earn the academic honor, the third-year pharmacy student needed to earn a minimum 3.4 grade-point average.
