Mile-high Matadors beat McCook; Youth volleyball tryouts

Seven hundred miles away and a mile up in the air, the Arizona Western College women's basketball team beat McCook (Neb.) 65-54 in the opening game of the Air Force Academy Prep School's Husky Invitational in Colorado Springs on Thursday.

Samantha Wallace had 16 points for the No. 17 Matadors (3-0), who never trailed in the game.

“While it was a long trip to get here, we had a good start to it, and the competition gets better each day,” coach Patrick Cunningham said. “Now that we've adjusted to the altitude and saw a little bit more athleticism today than we saw in the opponents last week, we should be better prepared for (undefeated) Gillette tomorrow.”

Nikki Villescaz and Lisette Longomo scored 11 each for the Matadors, who play at 11 a.m. today against their foes from Wyoming. Jazmin Strane hit two of the Matadors four 3-pointers in the contest.

The AWC men's team opens play in the PCAndrews Classic in Sells against Snow at 5:30 p.m. today.
