Teachers duct taped to wall for good cause

Students at Ronald Reagan Elementary School got an opportunity to duct tape some of their teachers to the wall during a fundraiser in the school cafeteria.

Each student was asked to donate $1, which went toward the teacher they wanted to see duct-taped to the wall. The students who paid got one piece of tape for every dollar they donated.

The three teachers who received the most money - Sarah Sandoval, Celia Diaz and Alissa Guevara - and the school principal, Tom Fletcher, stood on top of milk crates as hordes of excited kids came up to stick them to the wall Friday.

"We have always had a Relay For Life Team at our school, and this year we thought it would be fun for the kids to hold this fundraiser," said Sarah Gerber, event organizer and fourth-grade teacher.

"All the money goes straight to the American Cancer Society, and we thought the kids would enjoy taping their teachers to the wall. The first pieces of tape were applied by three former teachers who are cancer survivors and my son Richie Gerber, who has leukemia."

She also said that this event correlates with the end of AIMS testing, so this is a way to reward the kids for doing a great job.

Gerber said they raised $260 from the event. The school would like to raise $3,000 by year's end. She also said the event was an excellent way to educate kids about cancer and how many people it affects.
