Water main breaks on 24th Street
Traffic was restricted on a stretch of 24th Street for more than a day after an aging water main ruptured Sunday afternoon.
The break happened at about 1 p.m. Sunday near the northwest corner of 24th and Mary Avenue, between Arizona and Pacific avenues. City crews made repairs, restoring water service within a few hours.
Westbound traffic remained reduced to one lane in the immediate area until about 4 p.m. Monday as the patch set over the repair site.
The break in the 12-inch line appears to have been caused by age, said city spokesman Dave Nash. The line is 57 years old and has been a problem in the recent past.
A long-term solution is in the near future, though. Replacement of the line between Arizona and Pacific is in the city's capital improvement plan and is currently up for bid. The project could begin as soon as early 2013.
