Farm workers to be recognized during health and information fair
SAN LUIS, Ariz. - With services such as free hearing exams and flu shots, the 14th annual Day of the Farm Worker Health and Information Fair will be held Saturday.
The event will be from 4 to 11 a.m. in the San Luis Friendship Park.
Flor Redondo, member of the organizing committee, said that thanks to the efforts of Chicanos Por La Causa, one of the organizations participating, attendees will receive a hearing exam from specialists.
This service will be in addition to the 15 participating agencies that will be offering HIV test, blood glucose test, blood pressure test and the much desired flu shot – which will be offered free of charge – as is the case with all of these services.
Redondo said that 800 flu shots will be provided, 100 more than last year, a service that is sponsored by agricultural as well as private companies.
She said 3,500 to 4,000 farm workers are expected to attend, most of whom come to the fair before to heading to work.
"The purpose of this event is to recognize their work and immense contribution to the community. That is why so many agencies participate as a way of saying thanks for what they do," she said.
In addition to these services, there will be information on employment orientation, immigration and legal services.
There will be entertainment, raffles, music, artistic presentations and free breakfast.
The main event is the presentation of the Farm Worker of the Year 2008 award, given to a local farm worker for his or her dedication and teamwork.
Redondo said that the fair is organized by Campesinos Sin Fronteras, but that the celebration is made possible through the funding and sponsorship of the organizations and companies that participate.
